Nigerians are used to and love to ogle pictures of party-going young men who look extra handsome in agbada, a traditional Yoruba ceremonial clothing. The billowing silhouette of the bulky wear makes it impractical to wear on a daily basis in today’s Nigeria. However, it is very welcome at parties and that was the look Ebuka went for to attend Banky W and Adesuwa Etomi’s wedding. Though Ebuka is an Igbo man, his millennial agbada design literally broke the internet and it has been claimed he stole the show at the wedding.
Its embroidery, cut, and unique design speaks more of the cultural transformation in Nigerian fashion. In a way that carries an agbada, but not exactly like the traditional design, Ebuka’s agbada signifies a fashion renaissance.
Definitely, it tells more of Nigerian postmodernity and the changing face of culture. More than that, it tells of the renaissance in Nigerian fashion industry and Nigeria’s elite wedding culture, which has transformed into a spectacle.
